Simien Mountains

Often hailed as the 'Rooftop of Africa', Simien Mountains National Park is a dramatic alpine plateau sculpted by millions of years of massive volcanic eruptions and deep tectonic erosion. Inscribed as one of the inaugural UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1978, the park presents one of the planet's most jaw-dropping montane landscapes—a surreal terrain of jagged volcanic pinnacles, expansive high-altitude afroalpine moorlands, and sheer vertical escarpments that plunge more than 1,500 metres into deep river valleys below.

Endemic Wildlife of the Afroalpine Realm

The Simiens are a biodiversity refuge harboring extraordinary endemic wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. Most iconic are the Gelada baboons (Theropithecus gelada), often called 'bleeding-heart baboons' for the crimson patch of bare skin on their chests. These gentle, grass-eating primates gather in peaceful family troops of 200 to 600 individuals across the high meadows, allowing travelers to sit quietly among them for intimate, non-intrusive wildlife encounters. Along the sheer crags of Chenek, keen observers can spot the endangered Walia ibex (Capra walie), a magnificent wild mountain goat with heavy curved horns. The highest moorlands also shelter solitary Ethiopian wolves (Canis simensis) hunting giant root rats, while the thermals above the cliffs are patrolled by the massive Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture), known for dropping bones from great heights to feast on the marrow.

Classic Trekking Routes & Dramatic Viewpoints

Trekking in the Simiens caters to all fitness levels, ranging from single-day scenic nature walks from the luxurious Simien Lodge (the highest hotel in Africa at 3,260m) to multi-day wilderness traverses supported by local scouts, mountain guides, cooks, and pack-mule teams. A quintessential 3- to 4-day route connects the established wilderness camps of Sankaber (3,250m), Geech (3,600m), and Chenek (3,620m). Highlights along this traverse include peering over the rim at Jinbar Waterfall as it plunges 500 meters into the dizzying Geech Abyss, and standing atop the narrow promontory of Imet Gogo (3,926m) for a 360-degree panoramic vista across fractured canyons and distant basalt spires.

Summiting Ras Dashen (4,550m) & Trek Logistics

For adventurous mountaineers, an extended 6- to 8-day expedition pushes across the high Bwahit Pass (4,200m) and down into the Mesheha Valley to summit Ras Dashen (4,550m / 14,928 ft), the highest peak in Ethiopia and fourth highest on the African continent. The final ascent requires an exhilarating scramble over basalt boulders to reach the summit plateau for commanding views stretching toward the Eritrean border. High-quality four-season sleeping bags, windproof layers, and proper acclimatization are essential, as night temperatures across the plateau regularly drop below freezing.
